Juliet Promnitz’s current body of work is inspired by a desire for quiet and minimalist design and process. She is inspired by contemporary art and design, and the long traditions of African design, patterns and bold use of line and mark making.
Juliet Promnitz’s work is slab-built stoneware ceramics. Bot her functional and decorative vessels are hand built and finished with slips, glazes, and underglazes. The mark making is a combination of underglaze painting, line work and sgrafitto. The strong graphic quality of her work is achieved with careful use of materials, incising lines with needle tools and hand tooled brushes. Some of Promnitz’z pieces have additions of metal leaf and gold lustre.
Born in South Africa, Juliet Promnitz hails from a long line of artists, and has been playing with clay for more than a decade. Her revisions life as a quilter continues to influence her use of patterns and composts. She works out of her studio in Guelph, Ontario.
