Artist Statement

I am Genie Kim, a painter and ceramic artist originally from Korea. I hold a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Hongik University in Seoul. In my paintings, I use layers of acrylic gouache mixed with paints to replicate the effects of traditional Korean pigments, creating textures and a color palette distinct from Western styles. My sculptural work, an extension of my paintings, uses clay and is fired and painted, expanding my artistic exploration.

My art draws inspiration from deep personal experiences. Moving to Canada nurtured a deep appreciation for my mother's sacrifices. My own journey to motherhood has been one of discovery, and raising my child in many ways reflects my own childhood. These experiences brim with love, joy, whimsy, memory, dreams, and continuity.
Inspired by them, I work every day as if living a joyful dream.
